Vigorous Action
Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step of
which is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never attempted.
Though our decision was a vital and crucial step, it could have little permanent
effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of,
the things in ourselves which had been blocking us. Our liquor was but a symptom.
So we had to get down to causes and conditions.

I'm Charlie J and I have Alcoholism. I can only speak about my personal experience sober and with working to apply the Steps. When I came back to AA to stay I was like a pressure cooker that was ready to blow! I had done honestly, Steps 1, 2 & 3 and at 6 weeks sober I was ready and willing to move forward. I shared at a meeting I was going to do Step 4 and I was laughed at. Then I heard, "keep coming." I thought well these folks must know what they are talking about so I waited. The pressure without alcohol was building to a max level and there was going to be hell to pay! So again at 6 months I shared I was ready, willing and had a real need to do Step 4. I was laughed at and told to keep coming. Then my truth hit me, thank God! I have NO idea what these people needed. Me, I needed to move forward or I was going to drink again! So I took the 'Big Book' read and re-read Step 4 and went to it. I prayed before I started to write, every time, for what God wanted me to see. I spent 15 minutes to 1/2 hour a night on my first 4th Step. I was done in a week. My first 4th Step was as flawed as I was. I have done several more since then. I then followed the rest of the instructions in the 'Big Book' and then did my 5th Step. Working to apply the Steps must be working as I am still here and again, thank God for that. My suggestion, follow the book not the people in front of you as often the heard will stampeed over a cliff. Do the best you can as it's the "beginning of a life time processes." Thank you.
