From Darkness Into Light
To watch the eyes of men and women open with wonder as they move from
darkness into light, to see their lives quickly fill with new purpose and meaning,
to see whole families reassembled, to see the alcoholic outcast received back
into his community in full citizenship, and above all to watch these people awaken
to the presence of a loving God in their lives—these things are the substance of
what we receive as we carry A.A.'s message to the next alcoholic.

Thought to Ponder
There is a calmness to a life lived in gratitude, a quiet joy.

Chris, Alcoholic. Drinking became my life. The 12 Steps taught me otherwise. First of all I stopped running, I was so sick and tired at what my life had become and what the booze had taken me too. I learned that there was a solution and thinking about this right now gives me a sense of peace and gratitude, because I am nothing short of a miracle. As I became more sober through the process of the Steps, I found out that during all those years drinking, that I was searching for a life full of meaning and purpose. My heroines and heroes are the women and men of true courage and insight, people who have overcome much in their lives and are so humble about it all. I saw these people in Alcoholics Anonymous and when I asked how did this all happen? They did not attribute their quality of life to themselves, but to the Grace of God as they understood God (Higher Power.) Witnessing the lives of others change, listening to their stories, brought the belief that it was possible for me too. I hear it over and over again in meetings. "Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power—that One is God. May you find Him now! Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon. Here are the Steps we took." (p. 59) Today I am finding even deeper levels of that dependence upon God as I understand God. As long as I seek Him there is nothing that can go wrong in my life that I cannot handle with some measure of serenity. In other words, there are no big deals today. These are all the reasons to live and walk in gratitude and thankfulness for the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Thanks.
