Good morning, I am soul, alcoholic. I grew up thinking that whoever God is/was, he couldn't help with life or with how to handle life or with how to make life happy. So basically I thought it was some entity that some cultures required you believe in or not. I made up a God at age 11. Thought that most likely I would get more help from that "made up God" than from the one read about, heard about, told about by the cultures. And it helped me to an extent, but I never thought that alcoholism was something helped by spirituality. First I had to learn that it is a dis-ease. That it wasn't "my fault." That I wasn't being a "bad person" because I drank. And that took time to understand. The next step was to learn and accept that there is help for alcoholism. The spirituality of Alcoholics Anonymous taught me how to "use" God or rather, how to allow "God" to guide me. I learned through the Big Book how to follow spiritual directions. I learned that spirituality was the way to take me out of the "I can do it on my own" and "I should be able to do it." The spirituality in AA taught me that I need to rely on something outside of me. Call it whatever you want, give it a gender or not, that is none of my business, it is a personal relationship and experience with a Higher Power. The point is that I must be willing to rely on that source to give me courage to ride the sadness, the doubts, the fears, the joys, the changes that life brings me. Relying on a spiritual solution is unshakable. In my experience agnostics believe in something. Atheists do as well even if it is a belief in science or in themselves. We all have the capacity to believe and I work every day in the quietness of my evening, morning or day, to keep in touch with that belief. And that it will keep guiding me and supporting me even when I feel at my most desperate moments. Thanks for listening.
