AA Thought for the Day

The best reason first: If we skip this vital step, we may not overcome
drinking. Time after time newcomers have tried to keep to themselves
certain facts about their lives. Trying to avoid this humbling experience,
they have turned to easier methods. Almost invariably they got drunk.
Having persevered with the rest of the program, they wondered why they
fell. We think the reason is that they never completed their housecleaning.

My name is Sue and I'm an alcoholic. Step 5 -- what an order! I have to admit, I struggled with this step. My first time doing it did not go well. Lots of different reasons, but the truly main reason was I held "stuff" back. Well now, that got me exactly no where except back out drinking. I just couldn't seem to bring myself to share a certain "secret" and it kept me sick. So on my further work on Step 5, I decided to do it with my sponsor (first time was with a Pastor.) I was so nervous and I knew I had to be 100% forthcoming. And yet, I was so fearful of sharing it. God surely "had my back" that day. Because after my sponsor shared a bit with me about her 5th step, suddenly I became willing to "get it all out there." WOWZA! What a relief! The world didn't stop, I wasn't struck dead by lightning, all the things I had in my own head didn't happen. The opposite did. The relief and peace that came over me is something I still remember and still feel today. The Steps absolutely work IF and only IF we do them correctly and 100% honestly (at least for me.) I have not had a drink since the completion of Step 5 and those that followed. That's over 11 years ago and from a "chronic relapser" that's quite something! I've been blessed with the obsession being removed and I am protected each and every day by my Higher Power. I ask for help....He gives it.... I do some leg work and VOILA! Another sober day! Just wonderful! Thanks everyone!
