So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out
of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot,
though he usually doesn't think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must
be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us! God makes that possible.
And there often seems no way of entirely getting rid of self without His aid.

Thought to Ponder
Into action, out of self.

Howdy friends, Joe S, Alkie. I want to talk about a "God shot" I got, early in sobriety. I had formulated a conception of a higher Power, finally, after many years. I was reading step 3 every night with my sponsor. My mother used to say i was born selfish. [laugh] Never satisfied. Always me, me, me... more, more, more. I was chairing a meeting at my home group and a visitor, a well dressed, articulate 50 year old lady told MY story. She talked about selfishness, self centered thinking which also dragged her to skid rows and other bad places. WOW! Another piece of the "tough guy" died, right there. A big part of the decision we make in step 3 is to move on and do the rest of the steps. I have heard people say that "the selfishness melted away." NOT for me. I had to do a very thorough job on steps 4 thru 9 for that to happen. But, Thank God, it did. Keep it Simple.
