A Higher Power
We needed to ask ourselves but one short question.
"Do I now believe, or am I even willing to believe, that there is a Power greater than myself?"
As soon as a man can say that he does believe, or is willing to believe, we emphatically assure
him that he is on his way. It has been repeatedly proven among us that upon this simple
cornerstone a wonderfully effective spiritual structure can be built.

I am an alcoholic and my name is Erik. When I came to AA I didn't believe in anything and didn't want to. I'm so glad that AA didn't try to push anything on me. I may not have stayed. I fought the whole "God" thing...tooth and nail. But listening at a BB Study and to speaker tapes, I heard so many good suggestions....to just get started. I recall someone pointing out to me the statement in the BB that says, "God could and would if he were sought." It didn't say "Found," just sought. So I understood that all I had to do is look for this higher power and I would find help. Eventually I was willing to do that. The clincher for me was an experience on my way to work one day. I was a nervous wreck...worrying about the day ahead. I remembered a tool that my sponsor had given me. He said "Erik, when you are afraid or anxious, just say the 2 words, 'HELP ME.'" So I did, because I was desperate. There was no flash of light or lightning. The fear didn't vanish. But I suddenly noticed that I just felt okay. I was okay with the fear and just knew it would be okay. The day went just fine. Nothing that I was afraid of happened. Since then I have worked on my connection with whatever entity worked in my life that day. And I'm not perfect at it ....some days better than others. But I know that there is something there...from experience, and all I have to do is ask. Thank you for letting me share.
