Actually we were fooling ourselves, for deep down in every man, woman,
and child, is the fundamental idea of God. It may be obscured by calamity,
by pomp, by worship of other things, but in some form or other it is there.
For faith in a Power greater than ourselves, and miraculous demonstrations
of that power in human lives, are facts as old as man himself.

My name is Tom and I'm an alcoholic. Chapter 4 is not about what we believe, it's about WHY we believe. I grew up knowing there was a power greater than me (God.) Just figured that he/it didn't like me all that much. So how I believed needed fixing. As time went on, doing the steps, I found what someone said to be true. God (that power) is inside all of us, even if we don't want him/it there. WOW, that really changed the way I talked to other people! Because anytime I talked to someone ..... guess who else was listening! In time I have found that the simpler that my concept of God is, the better it works. I have no need of a degree in theology for that power to do for me what I can not do for myself. Thank you for being here for me.
