You will be most successful with alcoholics if you do not exhibit any passion
for crusade or reform. Never talk down to an alcoholic from any moral or
spiritual hilltop; simply lay out the kit of spiritual tools for his inspection. Show
him how they worked with you. Offer him friendship and fellowship. Tell him
that if he wants to get well you will do anything to help.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, (Working With Others) p. 95

Thought to Ponder
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry
this message to other alcoholics and practice these principles in all our affairs.

I'm Larry and I'm an alcoholic. My sponsor and most of my mentors taught me to be of service when I could. And they also taught me that the primary service of AA is carrying the message. That all service positions were in place to support the primary service. Which bursts the ego bubble of some service junkies I know but....oh well. I was also taught that I am to carry the message and not the mess. I've learned through experience that actions speak far louder than words. And that I make a terrible salesman. AA or otherwise. I also know from experience that we are being watched and evaluated by the newcomer. Maybe being the first Big Book they read. I'd rather they see someone quiet and calm representing a peaceful life than an AA salesman talking every chance they get. And I do believe the newcomer grasps that very well, given the time. I only need be there when and if they like the version of the book I represent.
