Abandon yourself to God as you understand God.
Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows.
Clear away the wreckage of your past.
Give freely of what you find and join us.

I'm BobbieJo, and I am an alcoholic. Clearing away the wreckage of my past came about by taking the Twelve Steps as outlined in our Big Book. I relied on blind faith when I came to my first AA meeting. I saw people with "books" and thought, “oh great -- I'm going to be told I'm damned and going to heck in a hand basket.” I would have walked out the door and was prepared to do so. My first meeting was in a church, and I had no idea it was due to cheap rent. As copied from the Grapevine: "... AA is not allied with any sect, denomination ...." For that, I am grateful that AA is spiritual, not religion/religious. For my past, it would have been a great turn-off. Death and institutions would have been my reality -- not my ‘yets.’ "We represent no particular faith or denomination. We are dealing only with general principles common to most denominations." (BB. pp. 93-94) Instead, I was given simple instructions to clear away the wreckage of my past by honest self-appraisal, sharing with another human, and yes, praying to a God of my understanding. And I kept that simple too. Clearing the wreckage of my past came through taking the Steps, especially Steps 8 and 9 after having taken Steps One through Seven with my sponsor. So, keep it simple is what I did. Keep it spiritual; what you name your God is your business -- mine is mine. It works is all I know. Follow the Big Book of AA -- nothing more and nothing less. Thanks.
