Surrender
Such is the paradox of AA regeneration:
strength arising out of complete defeat and weakness,
the loss of one's old life as a condition for finding a new one.

- AA Comes of Age, p. 46

Thought to Ponder . . .
We surrender to win.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
K I S S = Keep It S
imple; Surrender.

Hello, welcome to our new online friends. I am Charlie Johnson and I have alcoholism. The last thing on my mind on September 14, 1989 was stopping drinking for good. The only thing I obsessed about for a very long time was why won't God let me die? I was totally willing to die to find relief. Mind you, I still didn't that drinking was the root cause of ALL my troubles. But the good news is I didn't have to die to feel better. I went to a medical detox and after 7 days I came back to AA for the second time knowing I had alcoholism. I was relieved to finally know what my real problem was. I met a fellow after the first meeting who asked me some questions. The first was, "What do you know about surrender?" I thought it was some kind of a test. I gave it my best shot. He explained that as a vet of WWII he knew about surrender. I thought, “geez this guy is nuts, we won!” He said, “look at the Japanese: they lost, surrendered, and look what they have now.” WOW! So that is exactly what I did; I gave up, and surrendered fully. That doesn't mean I knew what to do. Hell no! What it really meant in my case was, I had no idea what to do, but I sensed you AA-ers had a handle on it. So I did the best I could, I showed up with an open mind, listened and had the willingness to do whatever I had to do not to go back to the living hell of a drinking alcoholic. Thank you.
