Steps
If you have decided you want what we have
and are willing to go to any length to get it --
then you are ready to take certain steps. At some of these we balked.
We thought we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not.
With all the earnestness at our command,
we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start.

Hi AA Family, I'm Peyton, and I'm a grateful, sober alcoholic. When I first came to AA, the thought of those 12 Steps scared me half to death. And I thought there is no way I'm going to do some of them or tell everything to anyone. I had a good sponsor though, who told me to relax, quit jumping into the future and stay in today. She said that I only had to take one Step at a time in order, and that they would help me by sharing their experience strength and hope with each Step. I still freaked out at times, for sure, but my very patient sponsor would gently reel me back in from the crazies by repeating, “Peyton, we're on one Step only, we're not to the next ones yet.” If you're new and if the thought of working these 12 Steps seems overwhelming -- it isn't nearly as bad as I imagined it to be. And the gift I received for doing those Steps? Sobriety: a life I didn't think I'd ever have; peaceful and content most of the time, and me -- the me I always wanted to be, and never could manage to be on my own. Stay close, jump in the middle of AA. It's a wonderful place to be.
