Self-forgiveness
Some of us suffer extreme guilt
because of vices or practices we can't or won't let go of.
Too little self-forgiveness and too little prayer
-- well, this combination adds up to slips.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 99

Thought to Ponder . . .

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I am an alcoholic. I am in my eighth year without booze. I have the greatest difficulty in forgiving myself for past deeds. Ten days ago, my self-will caused a terrible accident and my beloved mare "Kanga," of many years, had to be put to death. This has caused me more pain and guilt than I have ever had to bear in sobriety. This special mare has been in my life through all my sobriety, and a large part of my drinking with many nights passed out in her stable, cigarette and bottle to hand. The miracle is that I have NOT lifted that first drink. Even when I was howling and screaming out in my pain of remorse and guilt, I did not drink. How totally amazing is that? I know now, without any doubt at all, that I have a Higher Power. How else could I have survived such a painful tragedy without whisky? How else could I have survived 46 years crashing through life driven only by my self-will? I often hear AAs talk of recovery being like peeling onions, lots of tears and many layers to remove! Well, right now I feel a strange hope and lightness inside me, it's like I've had a pile of dead layers removed, yes, I've shed a lot of painful tears, but I have this wonderful feeling of hope and renewal inside me that all will be well and that my life has a purpose and it's ok for me not to know what's ahead. I have today. Most of all, this tragedy and painful death has shown me how to forgive myself. In forgiving myself I am free to move on and to love again. Carrying guilt around is another form of self-pity (something I'm excellent at!). Forgiveness of self is essential for growth in recovery. God bless you all and thank you for the inspiration these daily readings give me. ~ Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
