The Promises
Are these extravagant promises? We think not.
They are being fulfilled among us -- sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.
They will always materialize if we work for them.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 84

My name is Tony. I am an alcoholic. For a long time, I suffered in this Fellowship. I do not say it to worry anyone, but I would not change. I sponsored myself for quite a while (please don't do that). After the pain became too much, I found a long-term sober member who took me through the programme. I was introduced to the first 9 Steps and shown, that the first nine Steps clear the wreckage of the past, then follow just some of the Promises in the Big Book. One evening, at a meeting, I don't recall who was there, or who shared, but I listened to someone read the Promises, as I had heard for a long, long, time. But it was different. Something had changed. This is part of what I heard that evening: “We will SUDDENLY realise, that God IS doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.” Then it all became clear. I cried for the first time at a meeting, not tears of sorrow but tears of joy. The Promises were coming true. I believe in the Promises, not just those on pages 83-84, but the many promises that keep coming true for me -- “Sobriety is only the first gift of the first awakening” (As Bill Sees It, p. 8). What joy you have given me, and continue to give, as long as I continue to try to practice these principles in all my affairs! Bless you for listening.
