Joannie here and I am an alcoholic. When I first came to Alcoholics Anonymous I had no idea there would be anything like a ‘higher power.’ I don't know what I expected -- probably just men in overcoats and paper bags saying, “Join the party!” I was in for a great surprise. The people at those first few meetings were just like me – drunks. They told stories about a Higher Power, and I wondered what I was getting myself into. I'd had God in my early years, loved Him with a passion, and knew He loved me. But as years went by, I thought I didn't deserve His love or care anymore. I found myself with that paper bag, no overcoat, and sinking fast into a deep dark hole of misery. As I listened at meetings, I found others had felt as I did. I heard they had found relief in God. I thought, “Wow! I may have a chance!” They said, “Joannie, don't pick up that drink. Stay with us, and we will show you how belief in a Higher Power has worked in our lives.” I am thrilled to say I found that same grace in the rooms of AA. I found that the same God I had loved years before was still there, waiting for me. I have a spiritual life which pulls me through each and every day. Thank you, AA, and God for giving me a life today I never imagined. Thanks for letting me share.
