Step Three

"Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him."

To every worldly and practical-minded beginner,
this Step looks hard, even impossible. No matter how much one wishes to try,
how can he turn his own will and his own life over to the care
of whatever God he thinks there is? Fortunately, we who have tried it,
and with equal misgivings, can testify that anyone,
anyone at all, can begin to do it.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 35

Thought to Ponder . . .
If I have the courage to begin, I have the courage to succeed.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = A
void Anger.

I'm BobbieJo and I am an alcoholic. When I first came to take Step Three, I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I waited for I don't know what to happen. Maybe you were going to give me some magical thing and I could move on. I tried reading all I could get my hands on. I almost starting taking the Steps backwards. My old behavior came back quickly. I said, "What's the use?" and luckily, my sponsor heard me. She said, in the voice only a sponsor has, "Call me." I read the Big Book again and this time it seems I was ready to read. I got it. Step Three means (to me), less of me and more of God. I said to my sponsor, "Ok now what?" and she knew I had it and was ready to prove it by moving into Step Four. Step Three has always been my "go back to" Step, and it's because of that "less of me and more of God" thinking. Thanks for letting me share.
