Allergy
The tyrant alcohol wielded a double-edged sword over us:
first we were smitten by an insane urge that condemned us to go on drinking,
and then by an allergy of the body
that insured we would ultimately destroy ourselves in the process.
Few indeed were those who, so assailed,
had ever won through in singlehanded combat.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 22

Thought to Ponder . . .
Within our wonderful new world,
we have found freedom from our fatal obsession.

Hi everyone, Carol here, a recovered alcoholic. You can't make an alcoholic out of someone who doesn't have the allergy. Who else could understand what we go through before and after we find our place in AA? Who wants to be of service to other drunks? Only someone who has the disease of alcoholism knows what it’s like. I can't give you the date when I first discovered alcohol, yet I can remember what it was like when I was drinking, the circumstances, and the outcome. When I found AA, there was a sense of peace; of belonging. As Bill W. put it, I had arrived. Life was wonderful -- the hole inside was filled. Alcohol had brought me to my knees, begging God to let me die. It had turned on me and cut me deep down inside. Yet today, I have discovered the solution to my alcoholism. God removed the obsession to escape by means of alcohol. So, for me, there’s no doubt whatsoever what I am and what I have -- and that's a disease that wants me miserable or dead. I know it beyond a shadow of doubt.
