The "If" Trap
Alcoholism respects no ifs. It does not go away, not for a week, for a day,
or even for an hour, leaving us nonalcoholic
and able to drink again on some special occasion or for some
extraordinary reason -- not even if it is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration,
or if a big sorrow hits us, or if it rains in Spain
or the stars fall on Alabama. Alcoholism is for us unconditional,
with no dispensations available at any price.

- Living Sober, p. 63

Thought to Ponder . . .
Happiness is the result doing our next right thing
in spite of hurt, in spite, even of good fortune.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = Attitude Adjustment.

Hi, I'm Honey, an alcoholic. I grew up hearing constantly, “If only you … (fill in the blank)!” I picked up that thought process easily because for me, it deflects blame and lets me complain with impunity. To add to the “Ifs,” I added the “should haves” and “could haves” for myself and others. So I can easily win a grumpy contest even against a grumpy kitteh/tardar (a grumpy cat). But a few things help. I'm where I should be, although it is trying. And “shouldhood” leads to “chithood,” and that is not a nice neighborhood. Thank you!
