Getting Involved
I understand that service is a vital part of recovery
but I often wonder, "What can I do?"
I look around to see where there is a need. . . Suddenly, I'm involved!
The best speaker may make the worst coffee;
the member who's best with newcomers may be unable to read;
the one willing to clean up may make a mess of the bank account --
these people and jobs are essential to an active group.

- Daily Reflections, p. 32

Thought to Ponder . . .
Service is gratitude in action.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = Accountable, Aactions.

I'm Lu, an alcoholic. I remember when my sponsor had me take over making the coffee for my home group. I think I was 6 months sober, still had the shakes, and it was "hit or miss" as to whether or not I'd get the pot underneath the spigot before the coffee started coming out. Then I remember making it on my first year anniversary, how smooth and easy it was -- how much time there was to get it under there, and pondered about how hard that had been in the beginning. That was the night my sponsor whispered in my ear, “Time to find a newbie to pass this honor on, and it's time for you to volunteer to be chair for a month and get discussion leaders.” I was painfully shy and this was a huge stretch to pick up the phone for this. I'd already had practice picking up the phone to call my sponsor, to offer rides (I still had a car), read "How it works" in meetings, but this was somehow bigger than that. Then I remember the first time I told my story. I wrote it down and read it. Reading it very slowly, it took all of 12 minutes. The room was incredibly gracious and loving and accepting. I had good people who helped me get a solid beginning, and for all these things I am forever grateful. Those people, many no longer alive, save my life over and over again in a zillion different ways. Thanks for reading my share.
