Principles Before Personalities
We of AA believe that the principle of anonymity
has an immense spiritual significance.
It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities;
that we are actually to practice a genuine humility.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 192
Thought to Ponder . . .
The Steps are there to protect me from myself;
the Traditions are there to protect AA from me.

I’m BobbieJo, and I'm an alcoholic. I didn't catch on to what “Principles before personalities” meant until later. I used to think about it, tried to keep it simple, but what are the principles? The Steps. And I figure the personalities are my character defects. Instead of bad-mouthing another AA group, or family members, or friends, use the Steps. Use those principles -- honesty, justice, perseverance, etc., and the Traditions, too. I love not having an opinion on outside matters and outside of my family. It tells me to mind my own business and it makes for a happy life. I try to practice principles before personalities -- and in so doing, I live and let others live. Thanks for letting me share.
