Growing Up
Regardless of worldly success or failure, regardless of pain or joy,
regardless of sickness or health or even of death itself,
a new life of endless possibilities can be lived
if we are willing to continue our awakening,
through the practice of AA's Twelve Steps.

I'm Claudia, an alcoholic. In the Big Book it says, "If we are painstaking about this phase of our development . . .” It tells me that recovery comes in phases. The first phase is indeed not to pick up that first drink. Only by doing that can we proceed to the other phases of recovery. It's like growing up. I know that in my active alcoholism, my emotional development stopped in my early teens. This program has taught me how to grow up; and it taught me that only with my participation. I had to be rigorously honest and work the Steps in order with a sponsor, the way they are laid out in the Big Book. I learned the hard way I do not graduate. In order for me to maintain a healthy spiritual life, I must continue coming to meetings and talk with my sponsor even after I've completed Steps 1 through 9. I am so very grateful for the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. I am not terminally unique. I am never alone unless I choose to be, and there is always hope and help here. Thank you all for being here for me.
