Suggestions
If you have decided you want what we have
and are willing to go to any length to get it -- then you are ready to take certain steps.
At some of these we balked.
We thought we could find an easier, softer way.  But we could not.
With all the earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough
from the very start.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 58

Thought to Ponder . . .
All of AA's suggestions are free.
The ones I don't take are the ones I end up paying for.

I’m Steve, an alcoholic.  “Do as I do.”  If you had told me to stack Big Books in the corner to stay sober when I got here, I would have.  I had no other options.  I was out of doing things my way and had been for a while.  I HAD to drink.  So when they told me, or "suggested," I did it.  And they told me to pray on my knees to Something I didn’t believe in, not because this Something needed it but because they said I needed to know Who was in charge now.  Make sense?  Not at the time, no.  But I did as you did.  I went to 120 meetings in 60 days and then quit counting because you did it and so I did, too.  I read a Big Book, didn’t understand it, but I read it because you did.  “Monkey see, monkey do?”  Hell, a monkey would not have been doing what I was -- I was dying from drinking and I knew it.  Alcohol knew it too, but it made no difference.  NONE.  I developed my ways in AA because the old timers told me what to do -- suggest?  Bull; do.  I have a sobriety date of December 17, 1994.  And that doesn’t have to impress any of you, but it still floors me and my family.  We have lost a son, all we had, a home, and retirement savings, in sobriety.  I had a skull tumor removed and my left thyroid this year.  And I haven’t drank over any of it because I do what you do and what you tell me to do.  Try that way for a while -- it really does work.  Thanks for letting me share.
