Acceptance
Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober;
unless I accept life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy.
I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world
as on what needs to be changed in me and my attitudes.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 417
Thought to Ponder . . .
Ask yourself, "What would an adult do in this situation?"
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A B C = Acceptance, Belief, Change.

Hope, here, I’m an alcoholic. In case there's doubt, I’m only sharing my experience, strength, and hope -- no judgment on anyone else at all, just my stage here. I remember as a child 'collecting' hurts. And there were lots of them. I vowed to never forget. Well, that ceased working around the time booze ceased working. I am old enough to have known Dr. Paul O., author of “Acceptance was the Answer” in the Big Book, page 407 – a nice man, and his sainted wife, too. And I learned to grow into a grownup! I no longer fall back for long on being a 'hurt child.' I can't say 'never,' but only for short flashes. Then, I ask an AA grownup what they would do. My sponsor was a trusted grownup and not infallible, but ahead of me on this path, for sure. I learned in AA it's ‘grow or go.’ Maybe that's why 'lessons' repeat to up my game, not really a game, to up my growth. I think it's a big humility deal for me, acceptance, not to take it all personally. I think the biggest tool still for me and daily situation acceptance is saying, “thank you.” I never would have believed it until I tried it. It changes my insides and the whole situation. My husband had two thoughts that I adopted: The best one was that mature sobriety is marked by reasonable comfort with unresolved situations – reasonably comfortable! 'Thank you' does that for me. His other thought was one of his final lessons -- "It all comes down to Acceptance and Love." Thank you.
