No Regrets
If we are painstaking about this phase of our development,
we will be amazed before we are half way through.
We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 83
Thought to Ponder . . .
Fear not for the future, weep not for the past.

Hi, I'm Don, an alcoholic. I used to think that there would always be things that I would regret. I had made a mess out of my life and just didn't see any way not to regret it. Today, through taking the Steps, through going through the process, I don't regret my past. I'm not proud of the things I did. If I could do it over I would not have done them. But I don't regret them. Two reasons for this: (1) Today I know it took everything I did to get me here. I had to go through what I had to go through. (2) By cleaning up my side of the street, by making the amends and admitting and accepting my part, I have no reason to regret my past. I don't have to carry that bag of rocks around any more. I've seen too many people who got drunk again because they didn't clean up that past. Shame, Guilt, and Remorse will send me back out quicker than anything. Today I have the tools, a Tenth Step, and a sponsor and a fellowship that understands. I'm human; I'm going to make mistakes, but today they don't control my life. Thanks for being here guys.
