Forgiveness
I did not know that if I had just forgiven myself for some of my past deeds,
God would forgive me also.
I was always taught to prepare for the journey through life, never realizing until I came to AA
-- when I honestly became willing to be taught forgiveness and forgiving --
that life itself is the journey.

Hi Family, I'm Deb, and I am an alcoholic. How do I forgive myself? That's a hard one .. one that many have trouble with, I know I did. I worried that I could never make right the wrongs I caused. But I can apply some of those nuggets of wisdom that I received from others. One of those is, "Does God forgive me?" When I was asked that, I could answer yes, He does. I was told then I can forgive myself .. not as easy as it sounds. And on to the next nugget: "Look at the past, but don't stare." I was taught to look at it, see my part, and learn. Learn and grow. I cannot change my past although I would love to change lots, it just isn't possible. So I change what I can now and I do my best to be a living amends each day. Some days I am self-will run riot. I falter often, but I can make amends for those quicker now. I don't ever wish to forget my past, for that is my greatest learning tool. So, keep it simple, change what you can, work on forgiving yourself. If you're like me, I am my own worst critic. We have all the tools we need. We just open that gee-golly toolbox and grab (for me) a handful! By the grace of God, the program of AA, and the goodness of the Fellowship, I am sober today. Thank you.
