Helping Others
When trying to help a fellow alcoholic,
I've given in to an impulse to give advice, and perhaps that's inevitable.
But allowing others the right to be wrong reaps its own benefits.
The best I can do -- and it sounds easier than it is to put into practice --
is to listen, share personal experience, and pray for others.

Hi folks, I'm Dotti, a grateful recovering alcoholic. Helping others can be a problem for this alcoholic. Helping can be used as a great cover for being controlling and bossy. Even when I remember to look at my motives I can get caught up in other people's stuff and really think I'm trying to be helpful. I've been sober for more than a few 24 hours, but I am grateful that I am still teachable. I had an issue a couple of weeks back and really didn't understand my part in it. So, I prayed about it. Finally, my Higher Power pointed out to me how controlling and (w)itchy I was being. Wow! I needed to be reminded again about that. I can take your inventory and tell you what you need to do, but that may not -- probably won't -- be helpful to either of us. Now, I am more aware of some of my behaviours and I won't be upset or thinking about drinking if you don't do what I said. HP put me here to live MY life, not yours. Thanks.
