Choice
The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink.
Our so-called will power becomes practically nonexistent.
We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force
the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago.
We are without defense against the first drink.

Thought to Ponder . . .
Just for today, I choose not to drink.
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

I'm Michelle, an alcoholic. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines choice as: The act of choosing; the act of picking or deciding between two or more possibilities. To me, that's the beauty of this program, we can choose. Think about that .. did we have a choice before about drinking? Could we choose to drink or not? For me, I couldn't make that choice; it was already made for me, every day from the moment I woke up, until the time I went to bed. And always, there was a drink at the ready on my bedside table. But now, AA has freed me! And I CAN choose. But, I know if I decided to take a drink again, my ability to stay sober may be lost forever. Last week, I was on vacation and, boy, the drinks and pot were in abundance around me! I'm sure the friend I was visiting could benefit from this program. As we all know, you can't force someone into this program. I was proud that I could choose not to partake in anything. I didn't need to. One thing that keeps me sober is this thought: anybody can choose to drink, but not everyone can choose to stop.
