Resentments
If you have a resentment you want to be free of,
if you will pray for the person or the thing that you resent, you will be free.
If you will ask in prayer for everything you want for yourself to be given to them, you will be free.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 552
Thought to Ponder . . .
We are prisoners of our own resentments.
Forgiveness unlocks the door and sets us free.
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
A A = Attitude Adjustment.

My name is Hope, an alcoholic. I saw a lot of folks over time who objected to Step One. I guess it is the turning point at which I became willing. It takes what it takes, for each. For me though, I realized 'nice girls' do have resentments, even if I covered mine with bitter humor. My 'act' .. my coping mechanisms .. were not working anymore. I was told by a wise AA lady, "You do not have to live like a hurt child anymore." It felt like a slap, and that was how I knew it was true. My resentments only were gradually revealed, I guess, in small bites I could swallow with difficulty. I felt sure of Step One, but I felt really uneasy about my inability to forgive. I persisted anyway. One day, I was taken to hear a speaker .. Bobby E., for those of you in California .. he said, seemingly at me, "There are some things that only God can forgive." I gasped, "yes!" I remembered a story in the Big Book [p. 544], 'Freedom from Bondage,' which tells me to pray for those who hurt me. I did it, still do; a practice. I pray for them to have what I would want for myself. And I am relieved. Forgive, and the heat is gone. I feel forgiven, too. So, if troubled, remember on page 60 it says, "Do not be discouraged!" Persist. Keep the faith.
