Acceptance
Our very first problem is to accept our present circumstances as they are, ourselves as we are,
and the people about us as they are. . .
This is an exercise in acceptance that we can profitably practice every day of our lives.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 44

Thought to Ponder . . .
The Three A's .. Awareness, Acceptance, Action.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Hello I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism.  I guess I am a real oddball.  When the doctor in the detox diagnosed me as a chronic Alcoholic, I couldn't have been happier.  For the first time I knew what my real problem was: I had Alcoholism!  That same doctor empowered me by telling me that I am the only one who can do something about it.  Really?  Nothing I ever did before helped.  Then he told me that if I want to stay stopped, I have to go back to AA.  I thought, "AA?  Why would I go back to AA?  It didn't work the first time."  But I sensed deep inside me that the doctor had only my best interest at heart.  So back to AA I came.  Here, I found that acceptance is a good thing, but just a bare beginning.  There was work to be done.  First, finding what was broken in me, then accepting it.  Knowing it didn't have to stay broken was a great relief, but it would take even more work to root out the old and replace it with the new.  That new way of looking at all my life's problems has been a great help in first accepting what the life problem is and working to deal with it in a healthier way.  I have not yet been able to solve all of them, but the gift for me has been the willingness to do the right thing when I knew what that was.  Mistakes?  Yes!  But there was an underlying willingness to learn from those mistakes .. a life saver.  So, if you're new, I suggest that who you are today is not the person you will be one year from now if you are willing to do the work.  Thank you.
