Perspective
Where other people were concerned, we had to drop the word "blame" from our speech and thought.
This required great willingness even to begin.
But once over the first two or three high hurdles, the course ahead began to look easier.
For we had started to get perspective on ourselves,
which is another way of saying that we were gaining in humility.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pp. 47-48

Thought to Ponder . . .
My perspective will change my perception.  My perception will change my experience.
My experience is my life.

I'm Peyton, and I'm a grateful alcoholic.  When I came to AA, the world through my eyeglasses showed me the problem was with everyone else, and that I was so close to perfect it was scary -- it was they who caused the problems in my life.  As I began reading the Big Book, my vision got a bit fine-tuned.  Those glasses that told me it was you all, turned into mirrors.  I saw the cause of my problems, and it was me.  Through the programme of AA, I have learned how to not drink today.  I have learned to be responsible, to deal with the consequences of my own actions, and to let go and let God do all those things I cannot.  And as my sponsor pointed out, the word is ‘cannot,’ not will not.  My new glasses get smudged from time to time when my will gets in the way and I start thinking I know what's best.  Fortunately, God lets me know it, often through my dear friends in AA, who with love and concern tell me my head is on screwy again.  I am blessed by a new view of life today, and grateful for it.  Thanks for showing me how it works, and that it does work if I work it.
