Self-pity
Poor little old me.  I had the Ploms and almost died from them.
Sober, I would probably recovered with a few new scars on an already badly dented ego,
and my life would have been a different one. . .  It was alcohol plus the Ploms that almost did me in.
Though I no longer use alcohol, I must still guard against self-pity, a defect as "cunning, baffling, powerful" as alcohol.

- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 1], p. 27

Thought to Ponder . . .
Self-pity is followed by isolation is followed by a drink.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
P L O M = Poor Little Old Me.

I'm Susan, a grateful alcoholic.  Ah, the "poor me's."  I've had just a few hundred, maybe.  My husband left me with a three-month-old baby, I lost my house, I had to go on welfare, and more.  And that was just in the short term, never mind the many, many others.  And the worst, perhaps: I am an alcoholic.  Drat!  It was not until I got over my self-centeredness in AA, and started owning my decisions, actions, thoughts, and feelings that I was able to let go of all that "poor me" stuff.  And trust me, I don't miss it.  I enjoy being responsible for my decisions today.  It is a gift.  I am no longer a victim of the world unless I choose to be.  I simply choose not to be now.  Life is pretty dang good, even with the bumps that come along.  All part of the journey.  I am loving it.  Thanks for listening.
