Tradition Twelve
"Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities."
Moved by the spirit of anonymity, we try to give up our natural desires for personal distinction as AA members
both among fellow alcoholics and before the general public.
As we lay aside these very human aspirations, we believe that each of us takes part in the weaving of a protective mantle
which covers our whole Society and under which we may grow and work in unity.

Lance here, an alcoholic and very grateful for a sober day, and for all of you. My take on this Tradition is that it means we become more trustworthy and don't blab on others. It means we take responsibility for our actions, and place value on holding a confidence. It's very important, that word "spiritual" -- isn't that so? Having a new "Boss" now, we are a lot more sensitive to others, yet our own needs have to come first in sobriety before we can help another. I love this Tradition; it ensures our group has recovery as well as ourselves. None of us can always agree with each other, but we sure can agree on the right Principles which are clearly written out in our literature. In the early stages of my sobriety, "AA-speak" -- new words like Higher Power and all our slogans, were new to me, but instead of being a parrot, I learned we can express ourselves freely, and still encompass something fundamental about our Program -- without it, I'm a dead man. Thanks for letting me share.
