Hi AA Family, I'm Peyton, and I'm a grateful alcoholic. I always thought I was “Mz Independence” herself ... didn't need anyone; didn't want to depend on anyone. I was just fine all by myself. That delusional thinking was there long before I ever became an alcoholic. In looking at myself honestly through taking the Steps, I found I’d depended on anyone, everyone, and everything to feel ok about me. The problem was that no person could, or ever will, fulfill my demands for attention. I believe people are meant to depend on each other for certain things. They call that "interdependency," if I recall correctly ... needing each other without depending on another to fulfill all I want/need, etc. When I began to depend on God for direction, to help me with what I should and shouldn't do, my dependence on people and situations lessened. The Big Book, in "Working with Others," says that we won't stop drinking if we put our dependence on other people instead of God. I'd have to agree with that and say I had the results of picking up by not relying on God. So for all my babbling here, I could have made it a lot simpler and shorter if I'd only said dependence on God is good, and works; dependence on myself and/or other people doesn't work for me. Thanks for showing me how it works and that it does work if I work it.

try to live the Steps, which can be a task some days more than others. But if you want to stay sober; if you feel you are done, then this program can help you stay sober one day at a time. Stick with the winners. And for the new people, try not to drink today and keep coming back. There are many miracles within our halls of AA. Thanks for letting me share.
