To Wives
There is every evidence that women regain their health as readily as men if they try our suggestions.
But for every man who drinks others are involved—the wife who trembles in fear of the next debauch;
the mother and father who see their son wasting away.
Among us are wives, relatives and friends whose problems have been solved;
as well as some who have not yet found a happy solution.

Joannie here, an alkie for sure. When I first met my second husband, I had not started drinking yet. I met him at a NCO dance at the air base where I was a civilian employee. He was drunk. But like a good enabler, I married him anyway because I was going to "fix" him. I bought him a six-pack of beer a week. We were so broke we couldn't even pay attention. Eventually, he started stopping on the way home every night to a bar with his buddies. I was at a loss for what to do. I had two more babies at home, beside the one I had brought into the marriage. So the natural thing for me was to buy a little something (alcohol) for me to have at home. Talk about dumb! He told me that if I wanted to go anywhere with him, get a babysitter and go with him to the bar. By this time, my alcoholism was kicking into high gear. When my daughter was 14, she went to an Al-Anon meeting with one of my co-workers. She brought home a Big Book for me. Of course I didn't read it. One night, a friend talked me into going to an Al-Anon meeting. I sat there, listened, and cried my eyes out when I heard the members talk about how much their husbands or wives and families suffered. I knew then and there that I was a hopeless alcoholic but didn't find hope for a few more years. But I do believe that Al-Anon meeting opened my eyes. Thanks for letting me share.
