The Twelfth Suggestion
Carry this message to other alcoholics! You can help when no one else can.
You can secure their confidence when others fail.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 89
Thought to Ponder . . .
In AA we don't carry the alcoholic; we carry the message.
AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
E S H = Experience, Strength and Hope.

I'm Peyton, an alcoholic. I never dreamed when I came to AA (and came back to AA, sigh) that I would be able to help anyone else. It all seemed so confusing, so much to learn and remember. And of course I wanted to be all better yesterday. Someone very kindly shared with me that I didn't become so ill overnight and that I wasn't going to become recovered overnight, either. However, if I did take the suggestions offered, the Steps of this programme of sobriety and living, it would indeed get better. They were right; it did. No one needs to be an AA Expert or Guru to pass on the message. We just need to share our experience, strength and hope with others: sharing what it was like when we were drinking, what happened, and what it is like now. There's that one line, "You can secure their confidence when others fail." You all did indeed secure my confidence. You gave me hope, love, support and a few well-placed kicks in the bum when needed. I knew within that you all were the real deal. Today I'm blessed by being able to carry the message, to pass it on by sharing in meetings, one-to-one talks with other alcoholics, sponsoring others, and being sponsored myself. We have to pass it on/give it away to keep it. And it truly is humbling and a blessing that in some small measure, I can do that. Thanks for showing me how it works, and that it does work if I work it.
