Making Amends
The alcoholic may find it hard to re-establish friendly relations with his children.
Their young minds were impressionable while he was drinking. . .
In time they will see that he is a new man and in their own way they will let him know it.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 134

Thought to Ponder . . .
Don't mess up an amend with an excuse.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

I'm Ron, an alcoholic.  The hardest amends that I needed to make were to my family; my brothers, all six of them, and Mom and Dad.  To give you a “flavor” of our family gatherings, booze was the mainstay of the event.  After about four hours, the fights would start.  And it was always a knock-down drag-out fight.  For years, about an hour before the fighting started, my wife would say, "We have to leave."  She has this ability to know when things are coming apart at the seams.  But do you think I would listen?  No way!  I was having too much 'fun'.  I stayed away from my family for years.  After about five years of sobriety, my parents and brothers still didn’t think I would make it sober.  I invited them to an Open Speakers Meeting where I was asked to share my story.  And it was that night I made my amends to my mother, father and brothers.  After that night, they understood what I had to do.  The hardest part was making amends to my children.  When they forgave me, that’s when I really understood what unconditional love was all about.  I cried like a baby.  These tears were not tears of sorrow, but tears of happiness and joy.  So, if you are new, come in and listen to the music of Alcoholics Anonymous and I hope you stay long enough to learn the words.
