Taking the Fifth Step
Provided you hold back nothing, your sense of relief will mount from minute to minute.
The dammed-up emotions of years break out of their confinement,
And miraculously vanish as soon as they are exposed.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 62

Thought to Ponder . . .
Clear vision for tomorrow comes only after a real look at yesterday.

My name is Michael, and I am an alcoholic.  I was on vacation this last week and I got to eat dinner with my first sponsor from 23 years ago...with a couple of hiccups.  I remember what pain I was in.  I did EVERYTHING he told me to do and, most importantly, what the Big Book told me to do.  I finished my Fifth Step and sat down and reviewed the work I'd done so far, making sure I didn't skip anything to do the best of my ability at the time.  I actually timed the hour and then got on my knees and prayed.  What a beautiful experience.  I felt old memories, hurts and resentments lifted from me.  It was one of my first spiritual experiences.  I am on the Fifth Step again right now and I cannot wait till it’s over.  I think everything happens in God's time.  That is just my opinion.  And I could not imagine skipping Steps 6, 7 or 8.  I didn't get sober to be glum or dry and these Steps are on the way for me to be ultimately happy, joyous and free.  Thank you.
