Daily Reprieve
It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels.
We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe.
We are not cured of alcoholism.
What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Hello everyone, I’m Richard, and I am alcoholic.  Coming into AA and receiving the gift of sobriety is indeed miraculous.  And I’m sure all can attest that it ain’t easy for anyone to get sober, and it is even more difficult than that to get sober within AA.  We were all once on the Island of Misfit Toys, not fitting in because we were always drunk.  We didn’t get here because we sang too loudly in the church choir.  We got here because we were drunks with issues.  Some, like me, didn’t just have issues, I had subscriptions.  I had a predisposition to think that once I put the drink down and solved some legal issues, it would be a done deal and that I’d be home free.  I guess I sort of thought about it as if getting your tonsils taken out...you get them taken out, then eat a lot of ice cream and go home.  You are cured.  But in our case, once the drink problem has been solved, we are not home free.  It takes daily due diligence to maintain a happy and contented sobriety.  After one is in the groove, it is sometimes easy to rest on our laurels, but the Big Book warns of the dangers of doing so.  What we have is a daily reprieve dependent upon the maintenance of our spiritual condition.  It is sometimes easy to get too sick to be sober.  But there is another danger to be wary of just as much, and that is getting too sober to be sick.  That is when old-timers get so many years that they no longer feel they can expose their weaknesses and sickness.  But we need to always be ready to expose our alcoholism to other people who can recognize it in us.  So the warning here is not just “Don’t leave before the miracle happens,” but also, “Don’t leave or fade away after the miracle happens, either."  So, old or new, our disease is still working out doing pushups and staying in fit condition to pounce on us if we are not vigilant.  Stick and stay before, during, and after the miracle happens.  We need everyone.  Thank you.
