Hiya all, Claudia here, an alcoholic. AA is not a religious program. There is room in AA for people of all faiths; of belief, and non-belief. Alcoholics Anonymous has only one requirement for membership and that is the desire to stop drinking. Over the years, I’ve seen people come to AA and refuse to accept help because they become angry or upset when others talk of their beliefs. Every person has the right to believe or not believe as they will. In fact, I find that my fellows in AA enjoy a wide variety of relationships with their Higher Power. It is not my responsibility to convert anyone to anything in the fellowship of AA but I do, however, have a responsibility in this Fellowship when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help: I want the hand of AA to always be there. I need to respect another’s faith choices and be tolerant of people's right to believe in whatever they want. I also hope to find others tolerant of my right to believe whatever choice I make in regard to my beliefs. Step Two in the program says, “Came to believe in a Power greater than myself." It's a coming-to process. Nowhere in AA Conference-approved literature do I see that Power defined as a one-size-fits-all. What we all have is a program which helps us find an inner strength that we were previously unaware of. Where we differ is to who or where we attribute that source. That inner source of strength and direction is each man and/or woman’s vision. Through the Fellowship of AA, with the help of my God/Higher Power, I am recovered, not cured, from the disease of alcoholism. I could not stop drinking on my own. Through working the 12 Steps of this program with my sponsor, attending meetings regularly and serving to give back what I have so freely been given, I am sober today. I have a deep faith in a personal Higher Power who I meet with daily to thank for my sobriety and seek direction for how I work out my sobriety and my faith. My experience is that this Higher Power/God meets us where we are, and loves us too much to leave us there if we are willing to work with it/Him. As long as I remain humble and willing, I expect I will remain sober one day at a time. Thank you.
