The A.A. Preamble
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women
who share their experience, strength and hope with each other
that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.
There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership;
we are self-supporting through our own contributions.
A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution;
does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Hello all, I'm an alcoholic named Thomas, thankful to be sober.  The first paragraph of the AA Preamble sets the meaning of why, as alcoholics, we need to share our past and present to combat our disease.  Our experience as active alcoholics, lead us here to the AA program.  In staying sober on a daily basis we develop new ways of living with old problems, and drinking loses its hold on us by letting others know what we've been through, drunk and sober.  We form a bond that can be very difficult to break; at least for me I've found it so.  While drinking, I was looking for something I never could find.  In sobriety, I found that something.  I found myself by listening to others share their lives at meetings, how they put the Steps and Traditions into their lives.  I was able to do the same.  Some things I resisted, like most of us do.  The concept of developing a spiritual life and a personal concept of a Higher Power, everything I have in life today, is a direct result of the Fellowship in action.  Relating to others, knowing I'm not alone in how I feel that life's hard knocks can be dealt with sober.  Without the Fellowship, the program as written in the Big Book is only a half measure.  As much as this loner doesn't like to admit, I need you folks to help get through another day.  Thank you.
