Habits
Our drinking was connected with many habits—big and little.
Some of them were thinking habits, or things we felt inside ourselves.
Others were doing habits—things we did, actions we took.  In getting used to not drinking,
we have found that we needed new habits to take the place of the old ones.

Hi Everyone, I'm Lisa, an alcoholic.  When I was new to sobriety, I found that I had a lot of extra time on my hands.  Now that all my time wasn't spent drinking and thinking about drinking, if I wanted to stay sober, I needed to learn some new routines that didn’t involve drinking.  In fact, I had to learn to do things that helped me think more about being sober, if possible.  Some of the first things I learned to do were to eat breakfast, make my bed, take a shower, and get dressed.  Then, I read my Big Book (the book Alcoholics Anonymous).  I wasn’t working, so I would take a walk – get out in some fresh air.  I had a sponsor (she told me so), so I would call her to make plans to get to a meeting that day.  Slowly, but surely, I started praying.  I was getting to know more women and taking their phone numbers, and I began calling them, too.  My sponsor told me that if a woman invited me to coffee, I should go, so I did.  I started going to different meetings, meeting other people, and asking more questions.  I had been told I’d have to change playmates and playgrounds.  Maybe I was one of the lucky ones -- none of my old playmates wanted me anymore.  Once I had a taste of sobriety, I didn’t have any interest in my old playgrounds, either.  Soon enough, sober “routines” became the natural way of living.  But I never forget that today’s natural way can become the old way with just one drink, where the very first thing I do when I come to in the morning is guzzle a drink, and the very next thing I do is throw up and follow that with another drink.  Thanks for being here – you all help me stay sober.
