The Shared Gift
We must carry the message, else we ourselves can wither
and those who haven’t been given the truth may die.

Thought to Ponder . . .
A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Hi all, I'm Lori, an alcoholic. I remember when I first came into this program, I was consumed with the "they just don't understands." None of you knew what it was like for me. None of you had been through what I'd been through. None of you could possibly know the complete broken and demoralized state that I was in. Even in treatment, I spent the first few days silently scoffing at everything that was said. And then a counselor, one who was one of us, mentioned "the plan" that we all have. And I swear my ears almost swiveled forward like a cat’s when I heard that. My candle was lit. My attention was grabbed. And from there I was able to start learning about the Solution and believing that it could be true. Took me another six months of misery to commit, but after I did, I had several years of being happy, joyous and free. My candle was always bright with the Sunlight of the Spirit. And then I began neglecting it. The wax pooled up, and the flame became dimmer and dimmer, leading to relapse after relapse. And when I was almost in the dark, I reached out to people here, and they were able to hold their candles to mine, and light the flame again, and I could see the brilliance of the glow when we all held our candles together. And the darkness was pushed away. There was too much light in the Fellowship (especially when our Higher Power joined in with that mega-candle of His) to allow the darkness any corner in which to lurk. So I have two duties as a light-bearer today. One is to protect my flame, keep the wick trimmed and the extra wax poured away (I hope you're getting the point through all these metaphors) by staying in the Fellowship, working Steps, being of service, coming to meetings. And the other is to share my flame with other AA's, so that the light of our Fellowship never dims. Thanks.
