Prayer
In AA we have found that the actual good results of prayer are beyond question.
They are matters of knowledge and experience.
All those who have persisted have found strength not ordinarily their own.
They have found wisdom beyond their usual capability.
And they have increasingly found a peace of mind which can stand firm in the face of difficult circumstances.

I’m Larry F., an alcoholic. I don’t know if 40 years really makes one that much smarter or wiser, but I get most of my good and unselfish thoughts now during my prayer time with God. The other morning while praying I started thinking about something that had never occurred to me. We have the only program in the world that can make you feel like you are the most fortunate person on earth. For some reason this day the gratitude was overwhelming me. Usually, it happens closer to my birthday but I am nowhere close to that. As I prayed even more, gratitude kept rising in me but what came next was perhaps the greatest thought I’ve ever had in this program. We have the only program that I know of that if you don‘t feel as though you are the most fortunate person on earth you can darn well do something about it. Earth people don’t have that luxury. If you are down or in a bad mood pick up a pencil and paper (not your laptop) and start working a few of the Steps and doing a short inventory and watch what happens. God and you can and will change whatever is going on inside you, but you have to know what it is first to be able to change it. All of those Steps weren’t written to be used once and then forgotten. I use them daily and it may be the only reason I made it 40 years. So if you are going through something and you don’t like the result then start changing it. You are in the only program known to man that allows you to change for the better by yourself with God’s help. At the first meeting I ever attended I saw a sign that is one of the main reasons I may still be here. It said “the express elevator to sobriety is broken; you will have to use the Steps.” Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being here for 40 years. I hope the next forty are just as much fun.
