Change
It never occurred to us that we needed to change ourselves to meet conditions, whatever they were.

My name is Pammy, and I have alcoholism.  When I came in AA I was just an observer, looking for reasons and excuses not to stay.  I was always a firm believer that when I tried something new, life as I knew it knew would end.  And as any alkie knows, we don't like change.  So I was as resistant and defiant as if I were in an arm-wrestling match that I’d lost, yet won at the same time.  Coming back to AA again, I was put to task in facing my fears.  Phone service was one of them...I hated talking to others because I would stutter severely.  My Mom used to say it was because my tongue was tripping over lies.  And she was right.  It was a kind of self-preservation to keep others from knowing me, so I would make things up.  But the more I was learning, the more I was changing.  So yes, life as I knew it was over.  I no longer stutter when I talk, and I can let others look me in the eyes, as they are mirrors of the soul.  It allows me to expand a curiosity into what else can I do for me through working with others.  There is a quote I read daily, or when I feel stuck and sense some of my old stinking-thinking coming back: "When she transformed into a butterfly, the caterpillars talked, not of her beauty, but of her weirdness, and they wanted her to change back to what she had always been...but she had wings."  Thank you.
