Carry The Message
Carry this message to other alcoholics!  You can help when no one else can.
You can secure their confidence when others fail.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 89

Thought to Ponder . . .
In AA we don't carry the alcoholic; we carry the message.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

Hi, Maureen here, alcoholic.  I love this reading and topic.  And it reminds me this is a "WE" program.  It was true the day I got sober, and it is today, and will be, hopefully long after I am not walking the earth.  One thing that has evolved in my recovery is my ability to accept that I am one person; I do not carry anyone.  There is a slogan, "Carry the Message and not the Mess."  At times in my sobriety I have been inclined to get all wrapped around someone else's axle till the point I am nutz myself.  This is no help to anyone and certainly not a good example to pass on when we go on 12th Step calls.  It's best we go as 2 (or more) and when we share the message, sponsor, and so forth, we need to remember that we don't do any of this alone.  It is not healthy to put one person up on a pedestal.  Alcoholics can sometimes go out drinking again, so it is good to have a network of people you stay in contact with and realize that we are all human, doing our best to live in a way that goes against what comes naturally for us.  I understand that today.  I do not need to get so caught up in the results of my footwork helping others, but to focus on the footwork itself and knowing that the results are up to God...always were, and always will be.  It helps if I am aware of that and I stay healthier in the meantime.  This can especially be true working with family members: pass the message, line them up with other people, show them where to turn, and hope they do.  Be the example.  Thanks.
