Thinking
How persistently we claim the right to decide all by ourselves
just what we shall think and just how we shall act. . .
Besides, we think, there is no one we can surely trust.
We are certain that our intelligence, backed by willpower, can rightly control our inner lives
and guarantee us success in the world we live in.
This brave philosophy, wherein each man plays God, sounds good in the speaking,
but it still has to meet the acid test: how well does it actually work?
One good look in the mirror ought to be answer enough for any alcoholic.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 37

Thought to Ponder . . .
Don't believe everything you think.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .

I'm Larry, and I'm an alcoholic.  That "thinking" stuff about did me in.  I didn't come to AA willingly.  I was court-ordered.  So my willingness wasn't where it should have been.  Plus, I thought I was way smarter than you folks.  I didn't need your help.  I went to meetings; I read the book ('kinda').  I could figure all this out on my own.  And I was convinced my way would still work.  Well, after a little over five years of "Just don't drink and go to meetings," I finally hit a bottom that rocked my world.  And the most important action I may have made in my entire life transpired.  I worked up the nerve to walk up to a guy I had been watching and say, "Will you be my sponsor?"  I was finally ready.  And finally convinced that I couldn't think my way into a new way of acting, but if I did what you guys did, I could act my way into a new way of thinking.  I've never regretted the action I took that day or the actions that guy "suggested" over the next few months.  And I've learned a lot about how simple this really can be.  And that sometimes, the next right thing can be as simple as washing the damned dishes.  Thanks.
