Dependence on God
When World War II broke out, this spiritual principle had its first major test.
A.A.'s entered the services and were scattered all over the world.
Would they be able to take discipline, stand up under fire, and endure the monotony and misery of war?
Would the kind of dependence they had learned in A.A. carry them through?
Well, it did. They had even fewer alcoholic lapses or emotional binges than A.A.'s safe at home did.

Thought to Ponder
The will of God will never take me where the grace of God will not protect me.

I'm Larry and I'm an alcoholic. Early in my sobriety I began a career that keeps me in relative isolation for extended periods of time. I had to learn to maintain sobriety without AA meetings and very limited AA fellowship. And, quite frankly, I'm glad I did. Because I'm very confident that AA meetings aren't necessary to maintain sobriety. I had to dig further than the surface of AA. I HAD to work the program. I'm an alcoholic. I'm going to drink if left to my own endeavors. One thing that I fall back on every single day of my life is in print in our Big Book on page 77. "At the moment we are trying to put our lives in order. But this is not an end in itself. Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us." That in a nutshell is how I maintain sobriety and sanity. I pray every time I wake up, every time I lay down and often times in between to be of service to God. I pray for opportunities and those prayers are ALWAYS granted. But there is more. I have to be fit as the quote suggests. So I pray for the willingness and the wisdom to help bring about God's will in my life and in that of those around me. AA isn't just a book and some meetings and a fellowship. Bill Wilson said AA is basically nothing but spiritual kindergarten. I had no spiritual awareness when I began my sober journey. But by prayer and willingness to serve I encounter another new open door on a regular basis.
