AA Thought for the Day

All these, and many others, have one symptom in common:
they cannot start drinking without developing the phenomenon
of craving. This phenomenon, as we have suggested, may be
the manifestation of an allergy which differentiates these people,
and sets them apart as a distinct entity. It has never been, by any
treatment with which we are familiar, permanently eradicated.
The only relief we have to suggest is entire abstinence.

Thought to Ponder
God grant that AA may ever stay simple.
A A = Absolute Abstinence.

Good morning everybody, I am Soul, alcoholic. The word allergy opened a great door for me. I have other allergies, mostly to medication. Pretty dramatic effect in my body if I take something as common as an aspirin. People take aspirin with the same ease and frequency that alcohol is offered in our society/world. I somehow linked the importance of never being able to take an aspirin to the importance of never being able to take a drink. Understanding that I have an allergy to alcohol changed my life. The allergy causes a need to drink more and more and more and never enough. "What cha got and gimme more," were my mottos. Understanding that my body reacts to alcohol physically and it leads to mental, emotional and behavioral changes was crucial for me. It lifted a little of the shame I had about being such a "loser." It lifted the shame of feeling uncontrollable. It helped me understand that drinking alcohol was a power I could not control. So my surrendering was easier, filled with healthy fear like my fear of aspirin. I remember vividly the day I heard about the allergy to alcohol, it was like a light bulb had been turned on. Very thankful for that. Once that light bulb turned on, I started the trudging on this road of happy destiny, not in the darkness any longer. Thanks for listening.
