Your Own Conception
When, therefore, we speak to you of God, we mean your own conception
of God. This applies, too, to other spiritual expressions which you find in
this book. Do not let any prejudice you may have against spiritual terms
deter you from honestly asking yourself what they mean to you.

Thought to Ponder

Hello AA family. My name is Sammi and I'm an alcoholic. Growing up, I wasn't raised religious per se. I'd went to church at times and then kinda lost faith when all I'd hear is I'm scum under god's feet if I don't do "xyz." And that stuck with me for a very long time. My best friend was religious and if I did something that didn't follow her values, I was told how God wouldn't want that for me and I'm so terrible. So as I got older I believed God and the universe just gave me every bad card that could be dealt. And I ended up drinking through it all. When I got my DUI people talked about AA and the word God had me IMMEDIATELY like "Nope. Absolutely not. I'm not an alcoholic anyways." Fast forward to 3.5 months ago. I was praying to anyone who'd listen to me - begging for help. I was so done but I couldn't stop drinking. I got into detox and something pushed me to my first AA meeting. Being told this is spiritual and not religious got me to listen and boy am I glad I did. I have started reaching out to my HP - they saved my life. I realize it wasn't the universe picking on ME. Everyone is dealt bad cards. It's called LIFE. The 12 steps have been opening up my eyes to so much. And while I may not believe in God the same way the person sitting next to me does, I am still able to improve on making that contact with my HP to move forward every day. Even in the bad days. Cuz FINALLY I'm not feeling eternally alone anymore. I know I've got my HP with me, so long as I reach out. Thank you for letting me share.
