Time After Time
We will be more reconciled to discussing ourselves with another person
when we see good reasons why we should do so. The best reason first:
If we skip this vital step, we may not overcome drinking. Time after time
newcomers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts about their lives.
Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned to easier methods.
Almost invariably they got drunk.

Hello everyone! My name is Sue and I'm an alcoholic. I sure remember dreading Step 5... and I put it off long enough to drink again! Not a wise move. So when I began again, I knew that I just couldn't skip over it no matter what this time. My sponsor was so patient with me. I had put her through so much the first five years of her sponsoring me. She hung in there with me and I'm forever grateful for that! So after going through the 4th Step, I began dragging my feet again. I was fearful of sharing those deep secrets that I knew had to be talked about. And even though she was very patient with me, she was firm too. Let me get just uncomfortable enough with putting it off, to come to her and say "I'm ready." I remember we met at our Alano Club, it was early in the morning and very quiet. I was nervous but she immediately put me at ease with sharing some of HER 5th step with me. And lo and behold, some of what I was "holding back" was on her 5th step too! That in itself was such a relief! The words just started to flow then and we had a great, thorough journey through the step. What an amazing feeling afterwards! It was so true....I really felt a heavy, heavy weight leave me. And gratefully, I haven't taken a drink since then! A few 24 hours ago now. So it's so very important that I humbled myself. Opened my heart and truly and honestly worked the step. What I learned from that experience, I try to pass on to my sponsees and others. Then we went on to the Step 6 and everything just seemed easier. So if anyone is hesitant about doing their 5th step, don't be! Wonderful, wonderful peace and serenity is waiting for you. Thanks for being here and sharing your journeys with me!
