Sponsoring
If he is sincerely interested and wants to see you
again, ask him to read this book in the interval. After
doing that, he must decide for himself whether he
wants to go on. He should not be pushed or prodded
by you, his wife, or his friends. If he is to find God,
the desire must come from within.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, (Working With Others) p. 95

Thought to Ponder
AA is not for people who need it, it's not even for
people who want it; it's for people who will work it.

I'm Larry and I'm an alcoholic. I'm right there with a person who shared in that we really can't do much for the unwilling. I remember going through the "Save The World" stage. Wanting so badly to share in my discovery that I would overlook that pertinent factor. Pushing too hard. Wanting so badly to share it but so often feeling like I failed when someone didn't grab on and hold on. One time I was talking to my favorite old timer. He had a very long and rich AA history. We were talking about sponsoring and carrying the message. I said you must have sponsored hundreds over the years. He agreed then said "I'm still batting 1,000." What? You sponsored all those people and none of them went back out? He said "I said 'I' was batting 1,000. I never drank over any of them." That may sound cold. But. He was addressing me, not them. Reminding me to never place my sobriety in the hands of another persons successes or failures.

Thanks to all of you for sharing so generously of your experience, strength and hope in carrying the AA message.
